YEAR 5
Monday 26th February 2024
Year 5 have continued to impress us with their resilience and commitment to their learning. So far this spring term we have focused on improving our knowledge of fractions and ensuring that we know the methods in order to perform calculations. For many this has been new learning and we have been blown away by the children's ability to problem solve and reason their understanding.
Last half term we completed our English unit of Kensuke's Kingdom, we all thoroughly enjoyed this story and it has inspired all of the children to create some wonderful pieces of writing. This half term we are looking forward to completing our whole school 'Take One Book', which this term is 'The Snail and the Whale' and also using the short film of 'Alma' to create our own spooky narrative.
Finally, we are all extremely excited for our pending trip to Ingestre Hall at the end of this half term (Monday 25th- Wednesday 27th March), immersing ourselves into the arts, and completing projects together. We will be using our history learning of the Mayans to inspire our creations- we cannot wait to share the outcomes of this with you.

Year 5 have started this half term off with a bang! They were extremely lucky to get the opportunity to perform at Young Voices at the O2. The children learnt a range of songs and dances and then performed them to a large audience, they were incredible!
Last half term we worked extremely hard in Year 5 on improving our knowledge of fractions, ensuring that we were able to remember the methods and apply them to reasoning problems. In English we finished our Who Let the Gods out unit and then created a set of insturctions for the Grinch on How to Steal Christmas.
This half term we are beginning our English unit focused on Kensuke's Kingdom, we will be creating our own ship log entries and looking at the setting of an island.

Year 5 have had a fantastic first half term of this academic year, we have particularly enjoyed developing our knowledge of Ancient Greece and exploring the story 'Who Let the God's Out'.
A highlight was definitely our Ancient Greece dress up day, filled with exploring the Ancient Greek Olympics, making our own clay Greek pots and even having a Greek language lesson taught by one of our Year 5 students.
Additionally, we also paid St Luke's Church a visit, Chris delivered a wonderful lesson on how Christians show commitment and allowed us to explore the church.
Looking forward to this half term, we are continuing our hard work in Maths, moving on to looking at fractions. We have been really impressed by the knowledge of place value so look forward to applying this in other areas. Additionally, we are in the midst of rehearsing for Young Voices, it is all starting to really come together and we are thoroughly looking forward to our much-anticipated trip to the O2 in January.

What a great start we have had! Firstly, we would like to say a huge well done to the students for the way they have returned to school. They have begun Year 5 with a great attitude and have demonstrated a fantastic mindset to their learning.
We have kick started our English unit with exploring our text for the term 'Who Let the Gods Out'. This is linked to our history topic of Ancient Greece. So far we have thoroughly enjoyed the humour of the book and are very much looking forward to reading more. We will also be using this text to produce some wonderful pieces of writing, beginning with a persausive letter to join 'The Zodiac Council'.
In Maths this term we will be focusing on place value and our knowledge of the four operations. Ensuring that we are able to read numbers up to 6 digits and compare and order them using mathematical vocabulary.
Fianlly we are all extremely excited that we have launched the Young Voices trip again this year for Year 5. We will keep you posted on the details and how we are getting on with our practicing.
