A-Level Science CERN Trip
Posted on 15/01/2026At the beginning of the term, our A-Level students in Physics, Biology and Chemistry had the incredible opportunity to participate in a residential educational trip to CERN (The European Organisation for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland. This experience sparked curiosity, enhanced scientific understanding, and provided a unique insight into one of the world’s leading centres for scientific research.
Our Sixth Form scientists maximised their first day, enjoying picturesque lakeside views during lunch and visiting notable locations such as the World Trade Centre, the Science History Museum, and the United Nations.
The following day, they were inspired by their exploration of CERN, a place where science shapes the future. They toured the historic particle dome, cutting-edge accelerator facilities, and the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) and LINAC antimatter production circuit. Travelling via Cornavin Gare, with the Swiss mountains providing a spectacular backdrop, students experienced first-hand how theoretical physics translates into world-changing realities. This opportunity to observe science in action was truly unforgettable.
The trip concluded with time spent exploring the sights of Geneva, followed by outstanding science workshops led by two CERN experts. Students were immersed in cutting-edge learning around Positron Emission Tomography (PET scanning), experiencing first-hand how particle physics directly transforms modern medicine. This inspiring conclusion highlighted the integration of science, curiosity, and real-world application.
