Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI)
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) are fundamental to fostering a positive and thriving school environment. At Samuel Ryder Academy, we are dedicated to maintaining a welcoming and supportive community where every student and staff member can flourish. Our focus is aligned with the nine protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act (2010): age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
In an educational context, DEI ensures that all members of our community feel valued and respected, regardless of their background. It cultivates a learning environment that is free from discrimination and bias, promoting critical thinking skills and curiosity. Furthermore, it strengthens our sense of community and belonging, which is essential for student success. When students feel safe and supported, they are empowered to achieve their full potential.
Samuel Ryder Academy and our approach to EDI
1. Shifting from Equality to Equity: We recognise the distinction between equality and equity. True equity of opportunity requires acknowledging that individuals may need different forms of support, whether it be tailored resources, nuanced language, varied teaching methods, or additional time. Equality, which aims to provide everyone with the same resources, does not equate to equity. Our Inclusion and Pastoral team are paramount to the success of this provision and consideration.
2. Embedding a sense of belonging: We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity of our school community. We encourage the active participation and full integration of all students and families within our wider school community.
3. Early Intervention and Education: We are committed to consciously teaching inclusivity and fostering embedded societal attitudes from our primary phase, all the way through to our Sixth Form. This proactive approach aims to dismantle social constructs, fostering a culture of social awareness, care, and respect.
DEI at Samuel Ryder Academy is essential for preparing students for a diverse and inclusive future. It promotes personal growth, social development, and academic success. With ongoing support, our staff are cultivating a positive and inclusive learning environment that benefits all students.
