British Values and SMSC
British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC)
At Samuel Ryder Academy, we are committed to nurturing the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development of all our students. This is a vital part of our ethos and underpins everything we do, ensuring that students leave us as confident, respectful and responsible individuals.
British Values
British Values are woven throughout school life. Students develop an understanding of democracy and how individuals can influence decision-making processes. They learn about individual liberty and the freedom to hold and express different beliefs, alongside the importance of mutual respect and tolerance for those with differing views. Students are also taught to recognise and challenge discrimination, and to understand how the rule of law protects individuals and ensures fairness within society.
Cultural
Cultural development is embedded across the curriculum and wider school life. Students are encouraged to explore and appreciate the richness of different cultures, faiths and backgrounds within our local community and beyond. They develop a strong understanding of diversity and are supported to show respect towards people from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic groups. Alongside this, students gain knowledge of Britain’s democratic parliamentary system and its role in shaping the nation’s values and history. Students participate fully and respond positively to new experiences through the wide range of artistic, musical, sporting and cultural opportunities. They also recognise both the diversity of society and the shared values that bring communities together, while also developing an appreciation of the cultural influences that shape their own heritage and that of others.
Moral
Moral development at Samuel Ryder Academy focuses on helping students become thoughtful and principled individuals. Students explore moral and ethical issues, express their views clearly and consider the perspectives of others. They develop a clear understanding of right and wrong and are supported to apply this in their everyday lives. Respect for the law is embedded, alongside an understanding of legal boundaries and the importance of personal responsibility. Students also reflect on the consequences of their actions and behaviour, helping them to make positive and informed choices.
Social
Social development is a key priority, equipping students with the skills and attitudes needed to thrive in a diverse society. Students engage with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance. They learn to work effectively with others, including those from different backgrounds, and use a range of social skills in different contexts. Students develop cooperation, resilience and the ability to resolve conflicts in a constructive way by participating in community activities, volunteering and collaborative work.
Spiritual
Spiritual development at Samuel Ryder Academy equips students to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. Students develop their sense of curiosity and enjoyment in learning about themselves, others and the wider world. They are supported to think deeply, reflect on their experiences and show respect for different faiths, feelings and perspectives. Creativity and imagination are fostered across the curriculum, allowing students to express themselves and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Citizenship (KS3 and KS4)
Citizenship education further strengthens students’ understanding of their role within society. At Key Stage 3, students learn about the UK’s political system, including the roles of Parliament, citizens and the monarch. They explore the justice system, the importance of laws, and the role of public institutions and voluntary groups. They are also introduced to financial education, including budgeting and managing money. At Key Stage 4, this knowledge is developed further through the study of parliamentary democracy, the UK constitution and the different branches of government. Students examine electoral systems, human rights, international law and the UK’s global relationships. They also explore diverse identities within the UK and learn how they can contribute positively to their communities. Financial literacy is deepened through learning about income, expenditure, credit, savings and public spending.
Through our comprehensive approach to British Values and SMSC, Samuel Ryder Academy ensures that all students are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values they need to succeed and make a positive contribution to society.
