SRA is going for green!

Posted on 22/04/2021

Samuel Ryder Academy is delighted to announce that we are now part of The Green Flag Eco Schools Initiative.

In joining with some 59,000 other schools, across 68 countries, in working towards Eco-School status we aim to work on environmental projects and actions that allow our children to take control; that allow local problems to be tackled; to allow our young people to work on the issues they are passionate about and to develop environmental knowledge and skills.

Eco-Schools will be launched as part of a special virtual assembly for Earth Day to be shown to all students on Thursday 22nd April. Our new Eco Reps, representing all year group, Primary right up to Sixth Form, have each made a short video clip explaining how ALL students can contribute their ideas and get involved.

Thank you to Mr Hoque for leading and supporting the students in this process.

Whilst the main aim of Eco-Schools is to encourage and enable student awareness, involvement and action, we will gradually be encouraging whole school community involvement.

SRA students will initially be focused on three main areas of action:

  1. Raising awareness of the impact of littering and organising litter picking initiatives;
  2. Reducing the amount of plastic in the School, and working towards a total ban of single use plastic in the canteen, with more recycling where this is not possible;
  3. Creating more green areas both outside and inside the School, from tree planting to ‘Form plants’ for the students to care for.

We Need Your Help –

As lockdown eases, we may invite you to get involved in some of the above activities. In the meantime, your child/children are being asked to make ‘Eco Pledges’ on things they would like to make more environmentally friendly in the School; we invite you to chat with them about what, how and when they can do things a little bit differently at home too.

Students will be keeping you regularly updated on their Eco-Schools activities with E bulletins in the Newsletter; they are excited about involving us ALL in making a real collective difference.
