Students Transform London Colney with Community Mural Project
Posted on 11/07/2025Back in February, the Art Department at SRA was approached by London Colney Parish Council with an exciting challenge: to design and paint a large-scale mural in Hazeldine Car Park, an area that had become heavily graffitied and uninviting.
We saw this as a fantastic opportunity to make a positive impact in our wider community and were thrilled to get involved. To kick off the project, we launched a competition across secondary students, asking them to submit designs based on the theme "What it’s like to be a young person today." The response was outstanding, we received a wide range of creative and thoughtful entries.
To bring the final mural to life, we collaborated with local artist and illustrator Eve Broadhurst, who skillfully combined elements from as many student designs as possible into one cohesive and inspiring piece of art. Once the design was finalised and the council had ordered the paints, it was time to get to work!
This past week, a brilliant team of Year 10 and Year 12 students, supported by art staff and Eve herself, came together to paint the mural. The atmosphere throughout the project was one of joy, creativity, and teamwork, a true celebration of community spirit.
We’re incredibly proud of everyone involved and honoured to have contributed to the improvement of a public space within our catchment area. We hope this is just the beginning of more creative collaborations with our local community!
