First Girls Rugby Match

Posted on 12/01/2018

For the first time in SRA, we held a girls Rugby match on 10th Jan. The Year 8 and 9 team took on Nicholas Breakspear with great positivity and enthusiasm. The end result was 45-10! Well done to all involved. Year 8  On Wednesday, our Year 7 Rugby squad participated in a festival organised and hosted by Old Albanian RFC. The Christmas break had certainly enabled our players to recharge their batteries, given the level of performance they produced in their opening game, against an experienced Beaumont “B” team. Strong carriers by Roberts, Hayhurst, Choudhury and Khan enabled Sam FargeBennett to organise his troops to great effect with SRA winning 20-5! Our next game was against a physical, inexperienced Townsend school team. A superb, try scoring solo run from Roberts set the tone for this victory. Great defensive work from Hajousman, Woodward and new-cap Dagenais, provided the impetus for some great counterattacking play. A second victory 15-5 ensured we were top of our group and therefore qualified for the final, against a vastly experienced Beaumont “A” team. Early pressure at the breakdown, combined with an aggressive defence, enabled SRA to take an early lead.  Shell-shocked, Beaumont began to find their form and displayed a great handling passage of play, which resulted in a try of their own in the corner. A further try just before half time ensured SRA were behind at the break. Refocussed, our boys fought bravely throughout the second half to get an equalising score but to no avail. Final score 10-5. The squad were a credit to the school and have worked hard at developing their knowledge and understanding of this sport. They should all look forward to next season with anticipation of what could be achieved. If any players would be interested in continuing their rugby education outside of school then Old Albanians are recruiting now for Under 13 players (Year 8).
