Modern Foreign Languages-French/Spanish

Languages open a window to the world.

Through research, creative, and oracy tasks, students explore new cultures, practise real-world communication, and gain confidence as global citizens. They can participate in role-play, create multimedia projects, and engage in discussions in the target language.

MFL inspires curiosity, empathy, and intercultural understanding.

KS2

Research 

Research a famous French-speaking person (could be from Francophone countries such as Canada, Senegal, Haiti). Create a poster or presentation (in English or simple French) about their life and achievements. 

Label a world map with French-speaking countries. 

Create 

Create a piece of art based on French landmarks or cultural patterns, eg the Eiffel Tower, West African textiles)  

Explore music from different French-speaking countries and create a dance. 

Oracy 

French debate: “Should School Uniforms Be Banned?”. Use basic French phrases to agree/disagree. 

Learn a poem in French and recite it.

Year 7

Research

Find out about the different official languages spoken in Spain.

Research a famous French/Spanish sportsperson and make a presentation that you could show to the class.

Create

Label lots of the objects in your bedroom with Post-it notes in French/Spanish.

Cook a typical French/Spanish dish for your family.

Oracy

Watch a Disney film of your choice but with the French/Spanish audio.

Translate your favourite song in French/Spanish.

Year 8

Research

Borrow a book or magazine in French or Spanish from MFL and read some articles.

Can you find 20 new words or expressions that you could use in your own work?

Research a French or Spanish person that you admire - and make a fact file about this person.

Create

Start writing a French or Spanish diary - can you describe activities that you have done or what you ate?

What was your highlight?

Don’t forget to add opinions.

Create a revision resource which would be fun for a year 6 or 7 class.

Oracy

Select your language and level and sing along with an interactive listening game.

Ask your teacher if you can present a topic in French or Spanish to the class.

Year 9

Research 

Find out about a festival or celebration in a French/Spanish speaking country. Note down key facts about the event. 

Read a news article on Accueil - 1jour1actu.com. Write a list of key vocabulary that you have found out from the article and one interesting piece of information that you have learnt. 

Create 

Find a recipe (in French or Spanish) for a dish from a French/Spanish speaking country. Make it and record a short ‘taste-test’, including your opinion. 

Oracy 

Watch a film/TV series in French/Spanish with English subtitles. Record a short film review, including 5 key words that you learnt from it. 

Create a short video (no more than 2 minutes) in French/Spanish, describing a person that you admire from a French-/Spanish-speaking country and why you admire them. 

KS5

Research

Choose one of your other A-Level subjects and find a relevant article about it in French/Spanish.

Research a French/Spanish-speaking author.

Create

Write an article or poem in French/Spanish.

Plan a cultural holiday in a French/Spanish speaking region.

What is the cultural/historical importance of the places you have chosen?

Oracy

Mentor a French/Spanish student from a younger year group; by helping them, you will revise your own grammar and vocabulary and it will look great on your UCAS application!
