Young Geographer of the Year

Posted on 08/07/2020

During May, the Geography Department launched the Royal Geographical Society’s ‘Young Geographer of the Year’ competition for KS3. This year’s theme was ‘The World beyond my window’ encouraging students to explore the human and physical geography of somewhere, either local or further afield that exists beyond their window.

The competition includes very strict criteria to ensure the highest quality of work. The Geography Department was blown away by the students’ excellent geographical knowledge and skills, creativity and commitment to the subject. In total, we received 64 outstanding entries from year 7,8 and 9. There was a huge variety of entries in terms of themes, including the impact of the COVID19 Pandemic on the environment, personal holiday experiences which left a lasting impression and more abstract approaches, such as what cannot be seen from out of our windows and places in the undiscovered world.

It was an absolute pleasure to read all the entries. The competition states we can only send 10 entries to represent Samuel Ryder Academy which was a very difficult decision. Our 10 finalists are:

Alex Gardiner                                                              Joe Bigg

Ben Graham                                                                Luc Beaufort

Charlie Nicholson                                                         Lucy Allan

Elliot Tinson                                                                  Millie Adams

Harry Vango                                                                  Rohan Sunnassee

We wish those students the best of luck with the national judging process run by the Royal Geographical Society, and want to extend our gratitude to all the students who took time to enter. When school resumes in the next academic year, we plan to celebrate and thank all those who entered . Well done everyone!

From the Geography Department
